Herd mentality – news items on Irish and Portuguese banking crisis – root causes?

 

This article in the Irish Times, dated 19th April 2011, shows, even if it is in the case of a small country like Ireland, that blind faith in following a herd mentality, as enhanced and promoted by generations of religiously based attitudes and training (blind faith), leads to destroyed livelihoods and lives. We know that the problem is worldwide to some degree, but we might ask about the influences behind such extreme failings in this case. Why do we accept belief in the unreasoned?
